You're probably thinking of a Wood gas generator which uses wood as a fuel source for an internal combustion engine that in turn could be used to power an electric generator.
Perhaps a steam turbine? Wood provides less energy per unit mass than coal, but it should still work, it did for trains.
On the domestic scale, it's of course a lot simpler to just burn the wood for space heating, water heating, and/or cooking.
