Yes. Like any distributor-based ignition system, your cap and rotor can foul, break, corrode, etc. You don't have to replace your entire distributor, usually. You need to change your cap and rotor at service intervals, plus your wires and plugs. The actual distributor can break or grind the teeth (it's driven by the camshaft), but that would entail some pretty serious engine damage.
