From the point of view of Hinduism, the Universe goes through cycles of creation-preservation and dissolution. The universe is created, sustained, lasts for a number of cycles called yugas (a yuga is 432,000 years) and at the end of the particular cycle, (thousands of yugas) it dissolves and returns to the mouth of Brahma, the creator.
Then the whole cycle starts all over again. We have been here and done all this before.
