Elements make up compounds. For example: C=carbon and NaCl=Sodium Chloride. So the compound, sodium chloride, is partly made up of the element, carbon. <---- wow that is so wrong.

NaCl is made up of the elements sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl). Elements do make up compounds, but whoever answered this has no idea what the elements are, or how they are written. If a compound contains Carbon (C) it will only have a "C" in it, such as Carbon Dioxide (C02)
