First off, the NFL has 32 teams. They are split into 2 conferences (AFC and NFC) and each conference has 4 divisions (North, South, East, and West) In each conference, 6 teams make the playoffs. The 4 division winners and 2 wild-card teams. The wild-card teams are the teams who had the 2 best records of the teams who did not win the division. Thus, it is very possible for a division winner to have a record of 8-8, and a wild-card team have a record or 11-5 or even 12-4.
