One way is to take a tax appeal in order to challenge the value of your property that the municipal tax assessor put on it for tax purposes. A tax assessor looks at properties and makes a judgment about the value of the property. The municipality then applies the tax rate percentage against the value and comes up with the amount of the tax. Since assessing property value is somewhat subjective, opinions as to the value of a particular property might differ. Municipalities allow their property owners to challenge the assessed values. If a property owner challenges the valuation and wins, the value is reduced, thereby reducing the final amount of the tax to be paid.
