How can a nucleotide change?

1,014,354questions on

There are two types of nucleotide changes, transitions and transversions. Changing from one purine to the other is a transition, changing from a purine to a pyrimidine (or vice versa) is a transversion.

These can occur naturally and spontaneously but the rate of change can be increased with exposure to radiation or certain chemical agents.
