Infa-red radiation entering the Earth's surface is usually reflected back out to space, leaving the Earth at a moderately cool temperature. Greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide (CO2) or Methane absorb the infa-red radiation and prevent it from leaving the troposphere, keeping it close to Earth. This causes the Earth to warm up, leading to the effects of global climate change.
