The colony was granted to William Penn by King Charles II to repay a debt owed to Penn's father, Admiral Penn. William Penn wanted to name it Sylvania, which means "forest land" in Latin, but Charles II named the grant Pennsylvania, Penn's Woods. Unlike several other colonies, the name never changed.
