Before the existence of compilers, everything had to be coded in machine language, which commonly was the assembly language. While it is very easy for computers to work with, it is tough for humans. Mistakes were more common, and the result was programs couldn't become too complex without giving developers a headache. The compiler allowed humans to write easier to read code, then turned that into machine language, allowing the best of both worlds.
