You may make a request to the creditor who owns the debt you co-signed for to let you out of your agreement. Chances are the creditor will not allow that, since that would leave the signer as the sole debtor and the creditor would never have made the loan to that person without you as a co-signer. Some reasons why a creditor may let you out are if you or the signer find another co-signer acceptable to the creditor to take your place or if the signer has become more creditworthy and is capable of handling the debt alone. This would probably require the signer to put some type of property up as collateral.
