Creating an alternative history is not an easy job for anyone to take. At the very basics, you should imagine (probably draw a map) of the world in some point of time (for example, the 35. century). Then, looking back, create the past events, in the beginning only outlining them (like, in 32. century there was an atomic war that change the world for ever), and the slowly add more and more detail (the war was fought between Empire#1 and Empire#2, it was caused by the Emperor I`m-so-powerful of the Empire#2, it was fought for ## years, the most important front lines were on the Island of *&^ and by the river of *%$$$). After creating the details, you will probably want to sketch even the most ancient of past (for example, a cataclysm that destroyed the modern civilization on the 22. century.), or, if you althist will be more mythical, you could invent some creation myths ans things like that. My own alternative history of Eramār is build about the same way, starting with a blank map and ending with making up mythologies, religions, languages and ancient histories and drawing genealogies of kings and lords :)
