How do you read tabs for guitar music?

Each line represents a string on the guitar, from bass "E" (top line) to treble "E" (bottom line).

Given the following tab:

if I remember correctly: a guitar player would play the first fret of the treble "E" string, the second fret of the "A" string, the "D" string open (e.g. not pressing any frets), the first fret of the "G" string, then the second fret of the "G" string, the third fret of the "D" string, and the fourth fret of the treble "A" string.
