Those drives appear in the system as:
DVD-R - can write DVDs and CDs
DVD-RW - can write and rewrite DVDs and CDs
DVD-RAM - can write and format special RAM media
CD-R - can write CDs
CD-RW - can write and rewrite CDs

With Linux you can use the following command:

dmesg | grep DVD
dmesg | grep CD

this should show something like:
ide-cd: hdb: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM DVD-R/RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache

In Windows right click on the drive in Explorer and look for the Tab that provides hardware information.
