Mechanical digestion (for example chewing) enlarges the surface of the food (making smaller lumps and therefor increasing the surface). It also improves the mixing of the chemicals with the food and thus increasing its function. And ofcourse it (also) tranports the food trough the digestive track. The chemicals can break down the food in the most efficient order.
