The average dog should be walked for at least 40 minutes a day, which can be divided up into multiple walks. If your dog is 15 months old or younger, avoid strenuous or jarring exercise, like running, jumping, or sprinting, as these can harm your dog's growing joints and could help speed up arthritis or dysplasia later in life. If your dog is over 12 years of age, you should tone down your walks to 15 minute increments at a time so you don't overwork his aging body.
