law school in the US lasts three years.
In CA it's four years if someone goes to an unaccredited law school. The student must also pass a state bar administered exam at the end of the first year in order to be allowed to proceed on through the next three.
A law student must register as such with the state bar BEFORE he starts law school regardless of the accreditation status of the school.
In CA, believe it or not, a person may become eligible to take the bar exam by "reading the law" for a specified amount of time and complete the required courses of study. That means working with a member of the bar who is in good standing and capable of teaching the student the substance of what is required in law school.
