Often there is no option to disable the sound on the site itself, but there are a number of ways to disable/block sound yourself. Embedded audio is easier to block than Flash audio. Solutions differ for different operating systems, and different web browsers. See HowTo Wiki for full details.

In Internet Explorer, you can just go to Internet Explorer options and uncheck the option "Play Sounds in webpages".

In Firefox, you can install Flashblock for blocking flash audio. To block all embedded audio, edit you userContent.css and add the following:

/* block embedded sounds */
object[data*=”.mid”],embed[src*=”.mid”] { display: none !important; }
object[data*=”.mp2”],embed[src*=”.mp2”] { display: none !important; }
object[data*=”.mp3”],embed[src*=”.mp3”] { display: none !important; }
object[data*=”.mp4”],embed[src*=”.mp4”] { display: none !important; }
object[data*=”.wav”],embed[src*=”.wav”] { display: none !important; }
object[data*=”.wma”],embed[src*=”.wma”] { display: none !important; }
