According to Wikipedia, embryonic stem cells are stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of an early stage embryo, the blastocyst which, in humans is between 50 and 150 cells and is reached 4 or 5 days after fertilization. The other type of cells found in mammals are called adult stem cells.

A stem cell, basically, is a cell which can essentially reproduce forever. They can also differentiate into almost any other part of the body.
