Heat conduction occurs when heat energy is transferred from a high temperature object to a lower temperature object. To determine the temperature of water, a thermometer is placed into some hot water. As you see the liquid in the thermometer, heat energy is being transferred from the water to glass of the thermometer. And then heat energy is transferred from the glass of the thermometer to the liquid in the thermometer. When you touch a hot piece of metal, heat energy is being transferred from the metal to your finger.
