For a start, birds that pick off an alligator's parasites - don't know the name of these, but probably related to the oxpecker - get a good feed.

More importantly, large predators keep other animal populations under control, eg, sharks eating seals. (Maybe they also help keep humans away from their habitat out of fear, which makes it safer for other animals in that ecosystem?)

I've also read somewhere that alligator/crocodile dung makes good fertiliser for plants.
