They are both sedimentary rocks, formed from layers of sediment layed down in lakes or seas.Shale is fine grained, while the shape of limestone varies, it's composition containing silica, clay, silt and sand. Limestone has heavy solubility in water and acid. Shale is the most common sedimentary rock.
