There is a saying "There are no atheists in foxholes." A foxhole is a small defensive earthwork in a military setting, and someone in a foxhole is usually there because they may receive enemy fire. The saying means that people will become religious when in danger of death, and implies (falsely!) that atheists are cowards and insincere in their (lack of) belief.
