A commitment is getting serious about certain subject or situation that requires a long time to do. You can make a commitment about anything in life. When you go to school you make a commitment to complete your course, your essays and your tests. When you get married you make a lifetime commitment to your husband or wife, which is to be faithful, loving and understanding until death arrives.
When you accept a religion you make a commitment to obey and not question the religion's practices.
It is important that you examine the situation or the subject before you commit to it. For example, when you begin college you make a commitment to finish college.
If you can not keep your promise to follow through with it, then you should not commit. So my advice is make sure you can finish what you start. When you commit to something (anything) you do it for a lifetime or until you're done and over with it.
