In medieval times, a squire was a young man in the service of a knight. He would serve the knight because he was aspiring to be a knight himself. If he proved his loyalty, his knight would perform a dubbing ceremony and make the squire a knight. Later in the middle ages, knighthood could only be conferred by the monarch. And thus, squire became its own rank.
