The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a major part of the Constitution Act of 1982. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms outlines the rights of Canadian citizens, and cements them in the constitution. It was adapted from the Bill of Rights Act which was not cemented in the Constitution. The Charter makes it so that neither the government nor fellow citizens can infringe on a person's individual rights.
