A letter to the editor is a letter written by a reader to a magazine or newspaper. It usually deals with something they recently read in the publication that they may have liked a lot or strongly disagreed with, so they want to get their thoughts out there.

An editorial is a section usually written by the editor or publisher which usually states their point of view.

In short, readers write letters to the editor and the editor writes an editorial.
