The main difference is salt content. Where fresh water typically contains no salt, sea water contains much of it. This also effects density, meaning that objects that are too dense to float in fresh water may float in some bodies of sea water. It also effects which forms of sea life can survive, as some fish, for example, can only live in one or the other. Some seaborne species of mammal require sources of both types.
