There were many reasons that the Australian colonies joined together to form a single nation. Among these are that having a single nation would take away the need for citizens to hold passports when travelling between states. The states agreed to set up a federal government which would oversee many areas of law for the states including Immigration, Defence, Coinage and international policy as part of the "39 Heads of Power" set out in the Australian Constitution.
