Why do babies burp when you pat them on the back?

Babies swallow air along with the milk whether it is breastfeed or bottle-feed. In order to bring up that extra air, babies need to burp. Patting on the back causes vibration that allows the air to come up as a burp.

Babies drinking from bottles swallow more air than they do at the breast.
