Notre-Dame de Paris is important because it is the mother church of France. The building itself is of minor importance, as Maurice de Sully's original vision of 1163 was largely replaced by Viollet-le-Duc's modifications in the 19th Century, and contrary to popular belief, Notre-Dame de Laon is more significant in the history of Gothic architecture.
