Why is the Intermational Date Line shaped so strangely?

The International Date Line is shaped by the time zones of the countries that it runs near. Smaller countries affiliate their time zones with those of their biggest trading partner. This is so that both countries are doing business on the same days, instead of one country being on Friday or Saturday and another country being on Saturday or Sunday.
