Spider man made a deal the demon Mephisto, everyone would forget he was spider man, in exchange for his and mary janes marrage being erased and forgotten.

Let's not forget that the main reason for the deal with Mephisto was for him to save Aunt May's life, after she had been shot by a sniper who had to take out Spider-Man, after the Civil War. The everyone forgetting that Spider-Man and Peter Parker were the same person was kind of a side effect to the deal which proved fortuitous, since Peter had regretted being coerced by Tony Stark to reveal to everyone his identity (and J.J. Jameson was filing suit against him for the Spider-Man photos he had been delivering for years to the Bugle; since he'd forget it, there'd be no troubles with the law, and Spider-Man wouldn't have to pay up a hefty sum of compensation in the worst-case scenario). However, in return, Mephisto would take away the love he shared with MJ, his reasons being that he and Joe Quesada introduced J.M. Straczynski to some heavy drugs... I mean, that he grew tired of taking souls and decided to take people's love instead. And, since he considered Peter and Mary Jane shared the purest kind of love, that could be a nice starting point for him. Therefore, Spider-Man stories kind of regressed to the early 1980s in this context.
