St Paul was the apostle who actively spread the Christian faith among the Gentile (non-Jewish) peoples of the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Prior to his appearance the spread of the new religion was small and largely restricted to Jewish converts.

St Paul was also educated and wrote considerably. Thirteen books of the New Testament are attributed to him.
