It was the largest warship then commissioned and was intended to be part of a fast battleship squadron and faster than any of the Royal Navy battleships. Her endurance qualities, which were quite good for their period, were also better than any of British battleships that might give chase. Being a good fighting ship with many innovations, and a formidable opponent for any heavy unit in the Allied navies, Bismarck could engage any enemy battleship escorting an Allied convoy on reasonably equal terms and her range of weaponry could cause devastation to any undefended convoy.
